His interest in objects soon evolved to installations in which the placement of the sculpture became as important as the objects themselves. Lighting was an integral part of these installations, defining space and heightening the overall experience. While lighting continued to play an important role in Espinet's art, it also led to work that would transport him from the downtown music scene to the world of high fashion. Throughout the 1980s, Espinet created stage lighting for music industry showcases for artists such as Madonna , Sade , Sonic Youth , and the Beastie Boys . Lighting work for fashion designer Stephen Sprouse led to several years as a visual lighting consultant for Bergdorf Goodman , Barneys New York , and Ralph Lauren . For his work in fashion, Espinet received two Gene Moore Awards : for a Polo Sport window, and Comme des Garcons window created by Simon Doonan for Barneys . Rico Espinet features lamps and fixtures for Robert Abbey Lighting, Inc. that couples perspicuous line and warm, often atmospheric light into collections that affirm their environment. Drawing from his background in sculpture, architecture, and a fascination with the beauty of mundane objects, Rico Espinets lighting is rooted in a generous vocabulary of form. Although Rico Espinet continues to extend his collection, his first designs are still classics. The Monk Lamp , originally fashioned with a microphone base and plumbing pipe, was a homemade reading lamp Espinet had made for himself. When a photo shoot by Todd Eberle of Espinet's studio landed the lamp in both a House & Garden article and a Hunter Douglas ad campaign, Robert Abbey invited him to design a line to manufacture. The Scribe Lamp , influenced by the Monk Lamp was his first design for Robert Abbey Lighting, Inc.
